Principal Geotechnical Engineer
LOCATION: WINCHESTER
SALARY: £45,000 to £60,000 dependent on experience
Soils Limited is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Winchester and support our ongoing growth.

The Role
The role is a critical and varied one. Our Principal Engineers are the technical backbone of the company; cross-cutting our teams, supporting project delivery and building technical excellence.
Your input will be vital to helping the company continuously develop and improve our technical capabilities. Our Principal Engineers also help us identify and cultivate opportunities and steer the strategic goals of the business, with the latitude to seek out what interests you.
Typical tasks and duties will include:
Proactively lead live projects and review deliverables to ensure our technical output is of the highest standards.
Manage both contracting and consultancy projects. Allocate resources, oversee subcontractors and site teams, and ensure technical objectives are met.
Actively engage with the company’s efforts to identify new market opportunities and develop our technical abilities across our teams.
Support in the preparation of quotes and proposals with regards to technical requirements and objectives.
Mentor junior and senior staff alike. Both with ‘on the job’ guidance and helping to develop and lead training initiatives to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Support the company in building its reputation and contacts through attending industry events, conferences etc.
Engage with and remain up-to-date on developments across the industry including standards and best practices, feeding this back into the company.
Communicating ideas and technical matters to a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally.
Support in drafting and reviewing Phase 1 and Phase 2 contaminated land reports, Ground Investigation Reports (GIRs), Basement Impact Assessments, Ground Movement Assessments and other deliverables per national codes.
Drive technical issue resolution, internal compliance (e.g., RAMS, ISO standards), and team development.
Balancing technical objectives with commercial considerations to achieve the best possible outcomes for the company and clients alike.
Commercial responsibilities: involvement in contracts, invoicing, and client relationship-building.
Strong focus on combining GI technical know-how with consultancy-style project and business management.
About You
Progressive experience in the UK Geotechnical and Ground Investigation industry.
Extensive experience leading project teams. Demonstrable ability in mixing sound commercial rationale with technical excellence.
Familiarity with Eurocode 7 as it relates to ground investigation and geotechnical reporting.
Experience with a variety of London Boroughs e.g. Camden and their planning requirements, particularly as it relates to subterranean structures.
Familiarity with the Land Contamination Risk Management guidance and planning process would be beneficial.
Excellent communication skills and extensive experience in client-facing roles.
Professionally Chartered Geologist or Engineer.
Keen to learn and develop your knowledge and share your expertise.
Salary
£45,000 to £60,000, dependent on experience.
